ABout Musang King

The Musang King durian was originally called “Raja Kunyit” or “Mao Sang” (Mao Sang Wang). The mother tree grew on an island called Pulau Raja on the Kelantan River in Malaysia. In the 1970s, the mother tree was grafted and transplanted, leading to widespread cultivation in Raub, Bentong, Jerantut, and Sungai Ruan in Pahang. It was registered under the Malaysian Department of Agriculture with the code D197. Due to the growing popularity of the Musang King, the name was derived from the phonetic similarity to “Mao Sang Wang.” Locally, it is still referred to as “Mao Sang” or “Mao Sang Wang.”

Another explanation for the name Musang King (from the Malay word “musang,” meaning “civet”) comes from the role of the civet, known for its sharp sense of smell and discerning taste, in identifying the quality of Musang King durians. In Malaysia, fully ripened durians that fall from the tree without splitting are presented to a civet (referred to as “musang” in Malay) confined in a cage. If the civet becomes excited after sniffing the durian, it is deemed an exceptional “Musang King.”
